Polite fisticuffs, explosions, mysteries, and quips.
If you like these above things, then you will enjoy the new film put out by Guy Ritchie. Starring Robert Downey Jr. as the odd Detective Sherlock Holmes and accompanied by his faithful companion John Watson, played by Jude Law, this film picks right up where the last one left off. They are accompanied by a new female companion, Madam Simza Heron, portrayed by Noomi Rapace, and Mycroft Holmes, played by Stephen Fry. In this film, Holmes gets into a battle of wits with Professor James Moriarty, played by Jared Harries. At first glance, it is hard to see how Harris can portray a cunning, vicious mastermind who rivals Holmes in intelligence and wit, but it works very well. He is a great antagonist to Downey's protagonist.
In regard to the writing, I must admit that I found there was more emphasis put on action scenes and clever humor rather than on mystery in this one than the first movie. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing as it helps move the storyline along quite well. Law and Downey mesh very well together. The way they interact and talk to each other is practically perfect. Harris portrays the cunning, and malicious bad guy perfectly, and he seems to be a believable bad guy, which I could not say for Mark Strong in the first one.
The art, settings, costumes, and just overall nature of the film seem to perfectly fit. They just fall into their surroundings and mesh together. The environments, interactions and etc. work with the characters to provide an excellent area.
All in all, I would say this film is quite good, almost great. I found there to be one or two parts where it kind of lagged, but other than that it was a treat. This is the new Sherlock. I cannot wait for the next one.
